Botox (short for Botulinum toxin) is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is used medically to treat various muscular conditions, as well as for cosmetic purposes to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. It works by blocking the signals that nerves send to muscles, preventing the muscles from contracting.
When Botox is injected into specific muscles, it temporarily paralyzes them, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It is commonly used to treat wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes.
The effects of Botox usually last for three to six months, after which the muscles gradually regain their ability to contract. The procedure can be repeated to maintain the desired effect.
